Single-Acting and Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders
One of the first decisions when selecting a hydraulic cylinder is whether the application requires single-acting or double-acting operation.
Single-acting hydraulic cylinders use hydraulic pressure to move the plunger in one direction, with return provided by a spring, load, or other external force depending on the cylinder design.
Double-acting hydraulic cylinders use hydraulic pressure for both extension and retraction. This provides positive control in both directions and can be useful for applications requiring controlled return, repeated cycling, or faster retraction.
How to Choose an Enerpac Hydraulic Cylinder
Start with the maximum force required for the application. Cylinder capacity must be sufficient for the load throughout the complete operating cycle and should be selected as part of the overall hydraulic system rather than as an isolated component.
Next, determine the required stroke and available collapsed height. Stroke determines how far the plunger can travel, while collapsed height determines whether the cylinder will physically fit into the available space before operation begins.
Then consider cylinder action, return method, construction material, plunger configuration, mounting requirements, and whether the application requires features such as a hollow plunger, mechanical lock nut, low-profile design, or lightweight aluminum construction.
Finally, verify that the pump, valve, hoses, couplers, gauges, and other hydraulic components are compatible with the selected cylinder's pressure, oil volume, and operating requirements.
