Enerpac AHB Series air hydraulic boosters convert compressed-air input into higher-pressure hydraulic output for cylinders, clamps and other hydraulic devices. They are designed for applications where compressed air is available and hydraulic pressure must be generated without using a conventional motor-driven hydraulic pump.
Enerpac AHB Series boosters are designed for high-production and automated hydraulic systems where rapid cycling, consistent hydraulic output and relatively large oil delivery per stroke are important.
How an Air Hydraulic Booster Works
An air hydraulic booster uses the difference in effective area between a large air piston and a smaller hydraulic plunger to intensify pressure. Compressed air acts on the air piston, which drives the hydraulic plunger and generates higher-pressure hydraulic oil at the outlet.
Hydraulic output pressure depends on the boost ratio and available compressed-air pressure, making both factors important when selecting a booster for a hydraulic system.
Enerpac AHB Series for Automated Hydraulic Systems
Enerpac designed the AHB Series for fully automated production applications. AHB boosters use double-acting, one-shot operation of the air piston for high-speed cycling.
The fiberglass-wound air chamber helps prevent corrosion caused by moisture in the compressed-air system. The AHB architecture also provides relatively large hydraulic oil delivery per stroke for rapid filling of cylinders used in applications such as clamping and punching.
Choosing an Enerpac AHB Hydraulic Booster
Select the correct AHB model according to the requirements of the complete hydraulic circuit rather than model number alone.
- Required hydraulic pressure: Determine the working pressure required by the connected cylinder, clamp or hydraulic device.
- Available air pressure: Hydraulic output pressure is directly related to the compressed-air pressure supplied to the booster.
- Boost ratio: The relationship between the air piston and hydraulic plunger determines pressure intensification.
- Oil volume per stroke: The booster must provide sufficient hydraulic oil to operate the connected hydraulic equipment.
- Cycle requirements: Consider operating frequency and required production speed.
AHB Boosters for Clamping and Punching Systems
Enerpac identifies AHB air hydraulic boosters as suitable for high-production applications such as hydraulic clamping and punching where rapid cylinder filling and repeatable hydraulic output are required.
In automated systems containing both pneumatic and hydraulic components, an AHB booster can serve as the hydraulic power source while the machine's compressed-air system provides the input power.
AHB Series vs. Conventional Air Hydraulic Pumps
An air hydraulic booster and an air hydraulic pump should not automatically be treated as interchangeable equipment. A booster intensifies compressed-air pressure through an air-piston and hydraulic-plunger arrangement, while conventional air hydraulic pumps use a pumping mechanism and reservoir system to produce hydraulic flow.
Select the equipment according to the required hydraulic pressure, oil volume, operating cycle and control requirements of the application.
